Gustav Gerig, a Swiss-based food manufacturer, has recently become the world’s first European-based company to use a distributed ledger technology platform to track seafood. In a press release on 28th Nov, the company announced its partnership with global tuna marketing company Pacifical C.V.

The company will be using Ethereum blockchain to track its fish products. The tuna products will be traced from their origin, which is effectively when they are caught, till the moment it is purchased by a customer from a store. They said in their press release:
“To make their MSC certified canned and pouched Rosé tuna range under its “Raimond Freres” brand traceable through the Ethereum blockchain.”
The tuna cans will have a QR code attached to them which will allow users to scan the can and find out information about the particular product on display. The information that one can derive by scanning the QR is supposed to be comprehensive and accurate. The cans will additionally have the the logo of Pacifical on them to signify being part of this new collaboration project.

Gustav Gerig has also provided a handy guide of how customers will be able to use this product:
“In providing an optimal level of transparency the company will enable all its clients to access to data on exactly how the Pacifical MSC tuna was sustainably caught through the following information: which captain, vessel, catch timing, method, and area, where and when it was processed.”
The service that the company wants to provide its users will be built in collaboration with Thailand-based Atato, a blockchain service provider. Atato focuses on developing smart contracts and decentralized applications for clients. The system is being envisaged as one that will be user friendly. Once the consumer scans the QR code, they will be given a link to the blockchain viewer website, where they can access all the information about the product.

The user then has to submit a Pacifical tracking code situated on the can lid. The collaboration started back in August 2018 when Pacifical exploring how blockchain could be integrated in tuna products distribution.
